With college football into its summer break, an old cliche keeps popping in my head. It goes something like “You’ll need a scorecard to know who’s on your team.”
The sport is undergoing a change unlike anything fans have ever seen.
Transfer rules have been all but eliminated. It’s a version of free agency, and I’m all for it. Coaches and athletic administrators have enjoyed such freedom for ever? Why not the athletes?
There are more than 1,000 athletes in the transfer portal. That’s three for every team in college football regardless of division.
No coach has taken advantage of this change more than Florida’s Dan Mullen. In three seasons Mullen has returned the Gators to near elite status with transfers.
Alabama has probably lost the most transfers, but the Tide replaces the departed 4-and-5-star recruits with more of the same.
