I won’t remember where I was when the Jaguars lost at Baltimore 40-14.
The team suffered its 13th consecutive loss on Sunday, a franchise record for futility.
I will remember where I was when the previously winless New York Jets shocked the Los Angeles Rams 23-20 three hours later.
Why? Because that moment might have just delivered the top pick in the draft and the phenom that comes with it: Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Our problems might be solved for the next 20 years.
The Jaguars now are ahead of the Jets in the draft pecking order, thanks to the expected strength of schedule tiebreaker.
Now, there’s just one thing left to do.
Don’t screw it up, Jaguars.
You’ve got two games left.
Sit James Robinson.
Sit Myles Jack.
Sit DJ Chark.
Sit Joe Schobert.
Sit Laviska Shenault.
Play Taven Bryan.
Frankly, the Jaguars should place 23 players on injured reserve tomorrow.
AJ Cann should be starting at quarterback.
You simply can’t blow this by winning one of the final meaningless games: vs. Chicago on Sunday and at Indianapolis to close the season.
The 6-foot-6 Lawrence has completed 725 of 1,090 passes in his career, a 66.5 percentage, throwing for 9,698 yards with 88 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He’s also run for 951 yards and 17 touchdowns.
The Jaguars can win next year with Lawrence running the offense.
I’m not going to rehash the embarrassment in Baltimore. The Jaguars are a clown show right now. There were as many bloopers as big plays.
But, none of that matters now.
Not if Lawrence is coming to town.
The Jets just gave the Jaguars the greatest win they’ve had since defeating Pittsburgh in the 2018 divisional round of the playoffs.
Maybe their greatest win ever if Lawrence lives up to his LeBron-Tiger hype.
Put Adam Gase, Frank Gore and Sam Darnold in the Pride of the Jaguars.
The Jaguars could take Lawrence at No. 1, still have the Rams first rounder, still have two second rounders, a third and two fourth rounders to build around him. There’s a league-high amount of salary-cap space too.
The darkness might be over.
The sun might shine for the next two decades.
You’ve got to lose the next two games, Jaguars.
You’ve got to.
Thank you, Jets.
Welcome to Jacksonville, Trevor.
You will love it here.
