I always thought one of the things that made Steve Spurrier such a great coach at Florida was no one loved the Gators more than he did.
That appears to be the case with Georgia’s Kirby Smith.
Loving your alma mater isn’t enough, of course. You have to have outstanding coaching skills. But the combination can put a coach near the top of his profession.
Not having to question such a coach’s commitment goes a long way in recruiting and booster contribution.
FSU had a great thing going with Jimbo Fisher, for example, but Seminoles grew tired of Jimbo entertaining every offered dangled in his face.
The only way I see Georgia ruining its relationship Smart is to do what Gators eventually did with Spurrier: Unrealistic expectations.
Spurrier became frustrated when 10-2 wasn’t good enough.
Smart has put the Bulldogs among the elite, only a couple of plays away from possibly two national championships.
If the Bulldogs will enjoy the ride, it will last for a long time.
