The FHSAA state football playoffs begin this week and unlike the bigger classifications where every team starts play this week, in 4A-1A, many area teams are enjoying bye weeks.
Here is a look at the area teams that made the state playoffs in 4A-1A and the matchups to look forward to this week.
(1) Bolles (8-1) Bye
The Bolles Bulldogs enter the playoffs having won eight straight games including an impressive 21-10 win last week over Daytona Beach Mainland.
Bolles has earned the No. 1 seed in Class 4A Region 1 and it will begin postseason play a week from this Friday.
(2) West Nassau (8-2)
Like Bolles, West Nassau’s 8-2 mark has earned the Warriors a much needed bye.
West Nassau’s defense has been solid all year and the offense has scored at least 24 points in seven of their last eight games.
Could we see a Bolles vs. West Nassau game in round three of the postseason?
(5) Trinity Christian (5-5) at (4) Ocala Trinity Catholic (7-3)
Trinity Christian enters the postseason at .500 after playing one of the most difficult schedules in the entire state.
Trinity Christian enjoyed a bye last week to prepare for the postseason and is also coming off two of its most impressive wins of the year in beating playoff programs Raines and Lee.
Friday’s opponent, Trinity Catholic, is a good football team that started 5-0, but limped to the finish line going 2-3 in its last five contests.
(6) Baldwin (7-3) at (3) Episcopal (9-1)
This matchup features two area teams that also played in the regular season with Baldwin coming out on top 35-7.
Baldwin was 7-1 before dropping its last two games of the season and the Indians are looking to win in the first round of the playoffs this year after falling in the first round back in 2018.
For Episcopal it’s simple, Baldwin was the only team to beat them in 2019 and they will be looking for revenge and also a spot in round two.
(1) University Christian (9-1) Bye
It’s been a great year for head coach David Penland and University Christian.
University Christian has compiled a 9-1 record and has not lost to a team from the state of Florida all season. As a result they have earned themselves a bye.
People who follow high school football in the area know that University Christian’s season really doesn’t start until playoff time.
(6) St. Joesph’s Academy (4-5) at (3) Aucilla Christian (9-0)
Congrats to St. Joesph’s for getting in the playoffs for a second straight year after beating Interlachen last week 31-21.
Now they have to travel to Monticello and play an undefeated Aucilla Christian team which has not allowed more than 14 points on defense in any game this season.
Games just out of the area include…
(4) Hillard playing host to (5) Branford in the 1A state playoffs
(6) Bradford traveling to (3) Gadsden County in the 4A state playoffs
(4) Keystone Heights hosting (5) Astronaut in the 4A state playoffs
