Tony Dungy says Jaguars have talent to make deep playoff run

Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy recently joined “XL Primetime” to give his opinion on the Jaguars upcoming season. He started by talking about the acquisition of Nick Foles.

“I was over there about a week ago at training camp and I watched them practice and I think there are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that are there and I’m excited to watch them play,” Dungy told 1010XL. “Two years ago. they had that outstanding defense and a very strong running game, but the passing game could maybe be called the weak link. I think Nick Foles is going to be that missing ingredient.

“I got to cover Nick during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run and I got to know him a little bit and I just think he brings so much in terms of bringing everybody together and just being a team player. I think he is going to unify that team and bring that passing game to where it needs to be. I think they are going to be a handful this year.”

Dungy was asked why he believes a player like Foles can turn the entire organization around.

“I think he can because I think he is what this team needed,” Dungy said. “This team needed leadership at the quarterback position and they needed some critical big plays at the right time. They don’t need John Elway, or Dan Marino, but they needed leadership at that position and I think Nick can bring that.

“The talent level is there, I don’t think there is any question about that. This is a talented team that has pieces to the puzzle. So, it’s about playing together and I think Nick will help in that regard.”

With the recent retirement of Colts starting quarterback Andrew Luck, there is uncertainty surrounding the AFC South. Dungy was asked his opinion on who is the favorite to win the division.

“I really don’t know who to make the favorite in this division,” Dungy said. “I like Jacksonville a lot and I think Nick Foles is going to give them a shot in the arm. Houston has exceptional quarterbacking and exceptional energy from the offensive side of the ball.

“Tennessee is going to get better in the second year of the Mike Vrabel regime and I think people are going to fall asleep on Indianapolis. They have put a lot of pieces together on the defensive side of the ball. They have a great offensive line and Jacoby Brissett has played well in the past.”

Finally, Dungy talked about coming to speak to the Jaguars during training camp and talked about the message he delivered to the players in that Jaguars locker room.

“It was great to see everybody there and they wanted me to talk about what goes into making. Super Bowl team,” Dungy said. “What I tried to pass on to those players was that it’s not talent, but it’s the unity that is going to make the decision on how good you are going to be.

“They’re talented to win it all, but so are twenty other teams. Who is going to come through the adversity together and who is going to be determined that they aren’t going to let anything stand in the way of teamwork? Those are the teams that are going to win.”

The Jaguars 2019 regular season begins this Sunday at 1:00 when reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs visit Jacksonville. The game can be heard on 1010XL with pregame coverage beginning at 8:00 A.M. Sunday morning.
