Perhaps the real beauty of sports is it’s the one endeavor where our biggest challenge can be ourselves.
It’s when competition to win comes from within. When there are no opponents to conquer. No championships to win.
It’s the toughest possible challenge, trying to be better than we think we’re capable of being.
It might be as simple as the Sunday morning runner trying to go an extra mile or the marathon runner trying to beat her personal best.
It might be the weekend golfer trying to score his personal best.
Striving for these achievements is done in solitude. There are no cameras, no headlines, no outward reward.
What else in life provides this kind of opportunity to truly test ourselves?
It’s a battle seldom won, but when it’s conquered, it’s a beautiful thing.
