The PGA Tour and Mother Nature were both kind to the golfers in The Players – at least for a day.
The Tour, somewhat surprisingly, decided to make the rough basically a nonfactor. Stray a tee shot a few yards out of the fairway, no problem.
There’s not much the Tour can do about the short rough now. Grass only grows so fast. But the short rough combined with a soft course, the result of March overseeding and recent rain, has made the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course far less of a monster than architect Pete Dye intended.
As for Mother Nature’s assistance, well, she decided not to huff and puff like she often does around here this time of year. There was hardly a breath of wind during the first round and the world’s finest golfers took advantage. That should change by the weekend.
The Stadium Course is never easy, but under these conditions it was as easy as it gets.
There’s a long way to go and I suspect by Sunday night whoever raises The Players trophy will have earned it.
