Head coach Marty Lee and the First Coast Buccaneers pulled off the biggest upset of the week locally, beating Baker County on Friday night. Lee joined “Friday Night Lights” on 1010XL to talk about the win, starting with praising Baker County coach Jamie Rodgers.
“Jamie does such a good job over there at Baker County and he is such a good friend of mine,” Lee told 1010XL. “He has worked with me in the all-star games and we have become good friends. They are very lucky to have him. I called him this week and I told him, just give the old man a little time and we laughed.
“We played a good ballgame and the last couple weeks we have had chances to win a football game. I told the kids this week that we have been waiting for bad things to happen, instead of expecting something good to happen.
Lee was asked if this was the biggest win for First Coast in the past couple of seasons.
“There is no doubt because that program (Baker County) is where it needs to be,” Lee said. “I tell people, that used to be First Coast and we need to get back to that. I think we are slowly getting there.
“We have always stressed the academics and discipline part of it and now with kids being able to jump from one school to the next, you just have to get people to buy into your program. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.
“But, by no means does this make or break our season. We have a long way to go and we need to keep working hard and try to get ready for Lee on Saturday, so we will see what happens.”
Lee knows he has a challenging schedule ahead of him, but he welcomes that challenge.
“We are trying to change the mindset of this very young team and this win keeps us in the playoff hunt. We know we have Lee, Columbia and Atlantic Coast coming up. We control our own destiny just like everybody else and that’s all you can ask for in high school sports.”
First Coast continues its 2018 season this week against the Lee Generals in what is a key district matchup in the 7A classification.
