Jacksonville, Fla., It’s a July 4 tradition for many on the First Coast; the annual Celebration 5K. Registration is now open and from now until June 17, runners can register for a discounted fee. The Celebration Run to celebrate America is a great way to kick-off the Independence Day Holiday and there is a chance to win prize money and awards. Runners can choose the 5K run or the one-mile fun run and are encouraged to pick up an American flag at the starting line.
The Celebration 5K gets underway at 7:30 a.m. at 1st Place Sports at 3931 Baymeadows Road. It is a certified USA Track and Field course and is very flat and very fast. Digital clocks will be set up at each mile, all turns and miles will be marked and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will be there to control the traffic. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each category and prize money will be awarded to the top overall finishers. Every finisher will receive a finisher medal.
The one-mile fun run will begin at 8:30 a.m. from the finish line of the 5K race, which is behind the 1st Place Sports store on Baymeadows Road. Each finisher in the one-mile fun run will receive a finisher medallion.
Following the races, runners can stick around for the post-race celebration, which features a watermelon festival complete with a seed spitting contest and a contest for the most patriotic costume. There is also free food and drinks and free beer for runners 21 years of age and up. There will also be a random drawing for prizes, which will be based on the runner’s race number.
