A football column does not always have to be about “football.”
I had the privilege of attending the Hacker Fantasy League Wednesday night as part of the kick off to the NFL football season.
Let me just say football is not football in this town until Ryan “The Hacker” Green has his annual fantasy football league draft with local fans of both pro and college pigskin. Like the co-host of XL Primetime (with Joe Cowart), just the thought of fantasy football gets me a little bit excited.
Fantasy sports is to football as a Smoothie is to french fries at Wendy’s - you cannot have one without the other.
For the fans and participants who were in attendance, it was exciting, it was electric, and it was just what we all needed to get in the mood for some football. While the Jaguars may not be a playoff-contending team this season, there were 24 teams at Sneakers that wanted a crack at a championship, any championship. And whether you believe it or not, a fantasy football title allows you the chance for bragging rights all off season.
I know, I have won a league title before (not in Hacker’s League, not a league nonetheless).
Fantasy football may have been around for decades, but it just adds to the recent energy in the Jacksonville community. Leagues online, all across the country, in friends/ living rooms and in sports bars everywhere. This is what professional football is all about.
Just in case you were curious, I am in four leagues where I get the rights to own players like Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Jamaal Charles and Peyton Manning.
Hacker’s football league is just part of my football preparation. It sets the tone for what is to come. Hopefully that means the Jaguars have a shot at a playoff shot and championship title, just like all 24 commissioners in the Hacker Football League.
