Not even the White House can make the Jacksonville Jaguars sign Tim Tebow. Although Tebow fans tried as they might, not even the President of the United States can make Jaguars team owner Shad Khan sign the free agent quarterback, and more importantly to these fans, make him the starter against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Nice try. Great idea. There are some truly crazy fans that love their football, but enough already.
In a story from the Huffington Post, the fans and supporters of one of the most charismatic football players to come along in some time, wanted to go above the NFL to the highest power in the country to get their star player on the field.
I guess this tops the billboards Broncos fans posted in Denver to get Tebow in games, replacing then starter Kyle Orton.
It’s lunacy, if you ask me.
The story states that the petition, which can be found on CBSsports.com, that, “If the Jaguars sign & START Tebow, home games will be sold out, sales will spike, the team will win and the fans will be happy.Mr. Caldwell is ignoring lots of facts about the misunderstood Tim Tebow while in Denver: Passer rating of 125.6 is highest ever in Broncos postseason history. Most yards per completion (31.6) in NFL playoff history.100.5 QB rating is best ever for a Broncos QB in his first start.Third most passing yards in a game by a Bronco rookie QB. (308, in his 2nd start), First 15+ point comeback in the final 3 minutes of an NFL game since the merger,7 game winning drives in just 16 games!”
I want to know what Kool Aid these fans are drinking. Did they really think the White House would first take this seriously, and do anything about it.
President Obama is as big a sports fan as any President who has been in office, but it speaks volumes about how crazy a notion this really is.
Just so you know, the petition was removed from consideration from the White House's website under its Moderation Policy. According to a note at the web address where the petition was previously available, the petition was removed.
Finally, someone is making sense.
The fact is Tim Tebow is a player where it is all or nothing with him. I am not saying he is a bad football player or a bad athlete, because he can play the game and is one of the better athletes to get at it. But he is also miscast. He will only play quarterback when he could have success as a fullback or a tight end. Tebow is a marketing gem, which I agree with, but he is also a media circus for all the wrong reasons.
With Tebow, you get the rock star, the media giant, the evangelist, the philanthropist, the businessman and the athlete. Of all of those, the athlete in this case is the least important. That key element is the one teams like Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and Buffalo could use.
Tim Tebow is good for sports in terms of being a role model and I would be the first in line to have my son emulate him as a human being. There are few if any who are better. But let’s be clear, the two quarterbacks on the Jaguars’ roster are better at the position than Mr. Tebow. Regardless of him being a hometown hero, a good citizen, a marketing tool and someone who can fill seats, he probably cannot throw his team to wins anymore so than those in the roster. And when it comes right now to it, the NFL is really about winning. Tebow does not represent the best opportunity for that to happen here in Jacksonville.
