Head coach OJ Small and the Lee Generals had to play two games in a five-day period from Sept. 29 – Oct. 4. Small joined “Friday Night Lights” on 1010XL to talk about the challenges that schedule presented.
“We can’t do anything about it and that’s what I tell the team,” Small told 1010XL. “We just have to go out there and play football at the end of the day.
“We have to make sure we are preparing Monday-Friday in some cases, or Monday-Wednesday in other instances. That’s how the cards fell this year because we had no say so in the rescheduling of the games, but we have to play it.”
In that five-day period Lee was able to secure wins against Atlantic Coast and Ribault.
“We had to go down to the wire with Atlantic Coast, they are doing a good job over there, but we just had too many ‘my bad’s,’” Small said. “That is something we have to clean up every time we take the field. We want to try and grow ever week and as long as we keep growing, that’s all I can ask for.
“We definitely had a good bounce back against Ribault and we were able to come away with the win. We still have some stuff to clean up on offense, but the defense definitely played their heart out.”
Small and Lee fell in a hard-fought district game to Columbia back on Sept. 14, but since that setback, Small has liked the way his team has responded. He even liked the way they responded in that game itself.
“I’m definitely happy especially because we didn’t go out there and quit against Columbia,” Small said. “We finished the game and that’s all I ask, whether we are up by 50, or down by 50. They played hard till the end, but we just had too many mistakes during the game.”
Lee has a big district matchup this week against First Coast in a game that has serious playoff implications in the 7A classification.
